About Jared Lyman
I can help you pay off your debt and grow your savings.
My Financial Ups and Downs
My name is Jared and I understand that money is more than just numbers. Life comes at us and there are expenses we have to pay for. At the same time our income is generally fixed, and often we end up thinking there is never enough. We become scared, frustrated and/or ashamed. These are normal feelings that I can relate to.
Shortly after graduating college I created a simple “budget” to pay off my debt. I quickly realized it was going to take me 20 years to get out of debt, even with extreme cut-backs. I thought I would never be able to save for a down payment on a house! I was overwhelmed and with all the negative and self-defeating thoughts, I gave up and kept on living outside my means.
A few years later I discovered a much better way to track my expenses. More importantly, I learned to approach money with an abundant mindset, not sheer willpower, which rarely lasts and is never enjoyable. This change in thinking has helped me live within my budget for the past 14 years, pay off my debt and purchase a nice home. I can help you do the same.
Why Choose Me
Working in banking for 20 years I learned so much about the math side of money (budgets, income, expenses, credit scores etc.). But as a certified life coach I understand that the more important aspect to financial success is, what I call, the mental side of money. It’s the frustration, fear, despair and shame of money that really prevents us from moving forward.
My approach is to help my clients create a plan to pay off their debt. Then when discouraging thoughts set in or life’s set back come along I help them work through those to stay on plan, not give up, and get the results they want.
Think of it along the lines of a diet. Back in the 80’s diets we were all about reducing calories through willpower. Then we learned that by understanding our mindset we could move past sheer will to better control our urges.
It’s the same with money. Rather than focus on what we can’t have we can focus on what we truly need and want.
As a banker I learned that more money does not mean an easier life. I’ve seen those with a net worth in excess of $50 million who didn’t qualify for a loan. I’ve watched as others with incomes in excess of $1 million had to declare bankruptcy.
I’ve also had the privilege of helping others who “don’t know anything about money” but realize their finances are “in a mess” to live the lifestyle they want, pay off their debt and save for the future.
